handWHAT IS A TAPESTRY?

A hand-woven tapestry adds a very special quality to a room. The visual appeal is obvious but it also serves other practical needs; a tapestry adds liveability to a room because of its softening effect. It also reduces noise level in a busy space and provides insulation against a cool exterior wall.

Tapestry technique, which is probably most familiar to people today as medieval wall hangings, was known much earlier and there are numerous extant examples from Coptic Egypt, Pre-Columbian Peru, in China and Japan as well as the American Southwest.
